Law enforcement and emergency personnel were called to the scene after an incident that left another student requiring medical attention in the school clinic.
Incident Overview
During an administrative search, school officials discovered:
- A black plastic knife
- A pink plastic-edged weapon resembling brass knuckles
- A partially filled bottle of Fireball whiskey
Authorities determined that the student had used one of the weapons in an aggravated battery attack on another student, who suffered bodily harm. Fire and EMS responded as a precautionary measure, and the injured student was treated on-site.
Law Enforcement Response & Baker Act Decision
Due to statements made by the student and observations from Sgt. Kuentzel, officials determined that the individual was in a mental health crisis. Following a collective decision with school officials and law enforcement, the student was Baker Acted and transported to Bayside for further evaluation.
Additionally, the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) was notified regarding statements made by the student’s siblings, though DCF declined to take a formal report at this time.
Criminal Charges Forwarded to State Attorney
The case has been forwarded to the State Attorney’s Office with the following charges:
- Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon (FL 784.045) – The student intentionally struck another student and inflicted bodily harm using a knife.
- Possessing or Discharging Weapons on School Property (FL 790.115) – The student carried and exhibited a knife in a threatening manner on school grounds.
- Possession of Alcohol by a Minor (FL 562.111) – The student was in possession of a partially filled bottle of Fireball whiskey on school property.
School Disciplinary Action
The school administration has informed both the student and parents that the student cannot return to campus until a threat assessment is conducted. School officials will also impose further disciplinary consequences in accordance with district policies.
